Well it all started when we bought our first Golden Retriever as a pet for the children in 1968. I took this dog to obedience classes, and it wasn't to long before we started competing and winning.
I was hooked on both the breed, and the competition.
Our second Golden was a rescue from the humane society. This wonderful rescue dog went on to achieve a Utility title at the age of 8.
Ch.Goldenrods Lark of Trowsnest UD WC, was the next golden to join our family. She was my first introduction to English bloodlines!
I waited for two years for just the right breeding from Valhalla kennels and was rewarded with a puppy that was to become our foundation bitch. Thus "Folly" came into our lives.
Ch. Valhalla Trowsnest Folly UDT WCX, was the result of an wonderful breeding. Her mother: Beckwith Chickasaw Jingle, OD was bred to her grandson: Am/Can/Mex Ch. Calvos Happy Ambassador (OS). Folly, typified correct conformation. She had an outstanding forechest and upper arm with a rear to match her front. In other words she was a lovely balanced girl with a level topline and correct tail carriage which she held right into old age.
Not only was Folly beautiful but she was also quite a character. She would talk up a storm and this trait was passed on to generations of 'Chatter boxes'. Folly was bred to Bainin of Caernac CD (OS)***, a field dog. The famous " Int. Ch Mandingo Buidhe Colum" was grandfather to both dogs. This breeding produced my beloved "Whirly," AKA Am/Can Ch. Trowsnest Whirlwind UD WC Can. CDX WC (OS).
Whirly was the quite the character who like his mother had a great deal to say. While his sire and dam were both great talkers, they couldn't match Whirly. He was also an escape artist extraordinaire. I recall taking Whirly to the Westminster Dog Show in 1982, when he managed to escape from his crate and after much panic was found walking up and down aisles chatting and visiting with the other handlers and dogs, the tail going a mile a minute. One could not but laugh at him doing this.
Whirly had many Group Placements, including a Group 1. He had three Best of Breeds at specialty shows including Best of Breed in 1984 at the Canadian National. He had three Best Veteran at Specialty Shows; two of these were at the American National.
In 1989, Whirly won the Veteran's Class at the American National; and was awarded the very first Veterans' Trophy ever awarded which was donated by the English Golden Retriever Club.
Whirly went on to produce 28 American Champions; 15 Canadian Champions; 30 Working Guide Dogs for the Blind; two Signal Dogs; and many dogs who would earn obedience titles.
Whirly had O.F.A. excellent hips; and was known to be a hip improver. He not only passed on his outstanding conformation to his progeny; but also his super temperament and personality. Whirly lived to the ripe old age of 16.
Some people wait a lifetime and never are blessed to have a dog like Whirly. When asked to describe him, He was one of a kind, he was wonderful!!
I have been able to linebreed back on Whirly time and again over the years with great success. Producing offspring that resemble him in every way; But there will never be another Whirly.
In 1988, I was fortunate to be given a wonderful English import called Riley aka Can Ch. Padedali Penge Am. Can. CDX.
This was to be the beginning of my success in using some outstanding English lines in my breeding program.
Riley was bred to another English import named Darvell Tella Henrietta in 1991 producing "Daisy" aka Can. Ch. Trowsnest English Garden. Daisy became very influential to my breeding program as with this lovely girl I was able to blend my English lines to my "Whirly" American lines.
In 1994, I made the first of several trips to the U.K. to get puppies. During this first trip I had the good fortune to bring home a half sister to Riley. Can. Ch. Steval Semitone, fondly known as "Posh".
In 1997, Daisy was bred to Can.Ch. Haydene Commador (English Import) and from that litter I kept a lovely puppy who eventually became Can.Ch. Trowsnest Mrs. Miniver aka "Minnie".
In 1997, I again went to England and brought home a linebred dog out of the Stanroph lines. His name is Can. Ch. Stanroph Sea to Shining Sea, aka Salty. He surprisingly has proven to be a wonderful field dog who has earned his Senior Hunter and has produced some beautiful puppies.
In 1999, Posh was bred to Eng. Ch. Rayleas Column via frozen semen; producing a lovely litter of 8 puppies. From this litter I kept two puppies. Trowsnest English Gentry CD SH (Toffer) and his sister, Can. Ch. Trowsnest Upper Crust (Plummy).
What I have endeavored and continue to do, is use the lovely English bloodlines that I import, to compliment my original Whirly lines. The results of this can be seen throughout this website. My dogs are family members and I continue to work hard to breed dogs who are not only conformationally sound, have an outstanding work ethic, and birdiness, but also have the wonderful Golden Retriever temperament that we love.
I have been asked about the name "Trowsnest". My father-in-law has a summer home where he lived. He had been given a house sign as a gift that was called "Trowsnest". When I got hooked on the breed, I borrowed the name from my father-in-law. It is significant in that often my husband Dick is fondly referred to as "Trow" and myself "Mrs. Trow." and it would stand to reason that our home would be the Nest for "Trows" kids and dogs alike.
This brings us to the present day dogs of Trowsnest, who are representative of the very best of English and American bloodlines.
Today I endeavor to breed Golden's with beauty and brains and I strive to maintain the working ability, for which the Golden was intended..
